In the dictionary of Crusca, the word "furniture", is defined as "providing for the necessary". Battisti adds that the word "furniture" is derived from the Gothic "ga-redàm", which means "take care", and from the Spanish "arrear" which means "adorn"... From these very simple terms the principle of necessity follows.
Furnishings are needed, hence the corollary to take care of the furniture, their conservation and, above all, their beauty, these things I believe to be a categorical imperative for our profession.
